The Haggadah, executed by Arthur Szyk, edited by Cecil Roth

Arthur Szyk (1894–1951), a Polish-Jewish artist, painted the Haggadah's 48 watercolour-and-gouache pages in Łódź between 1934 and 1936[4][2]. His original paintings drew a parallel between Egyptian bondage and Nazi Germany: swastikas worked into ornament and several villains depicted as Hitler[2][3].

No publisher in continental Europe would take it on; Szyk moved to London in 1937 to supervise printing[4], where he toned down some imagery – swastikas became circles, though the Wicked Son kept a Hitler moustache[2]. The historian Cecil Roth edited, translated and annotated the text[4][5]. First edition: Beaconsfield Press, London 1940, a press founded for this purpose; printed by the Sun Engraving Company and bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. 250 numbered copies on vellum, signed by Szyk and Roth, half for Britain and half for the USA; dedicated to King George VI, it was then the most expensive book in the world[1][4]. Trade editions: the first paper edition appeared in Israel in 1956 (Massadah and Magen, Jerusalem–Tel Aviv), 10,000 copies, with another 10,000 in 1957 – all in blue velvet covers and a blue cloth box. Further editions followed in 1960, 1962 and through the 1960s up to 2003, in two sizes and various bindings, all printed from the 1940 plates[4]. Historicana edition (Burlingame, CA, 2008): digitally photographed and printed from the original artwork, with a new translation and commentary by Byron L. Sherwin, published by Irvin Ungar, with the companion volume Freedom Illuminated[5][6][7]. The collection's copy is the Massadah & Alumoth edition, Jerusalem–Tel Aviv, 5717/1957[4]. Bilingual and lavishly illustrated, bound in blue velvet with a gilt goblet, 30×25 cm, housed in an ornate wooden case with some defects. The book itself is in very good condition, with only a few slightly yellowed leaves.

The cover carries a 1954 copyright notice. A copy in the Arnold Levin Collection at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries: 65 pages with illustrations, 22 cm; vocalised Hebrew with English on facing pages; rubrics in Yiddish and English; a Passover calendar in English and Yiddish; on page 65 an English poem based on Had Gadya and a note about the Afikoman; a Hersh's advertisement on the back cover. The catalogue notes that the English translation is similar but not identical to other Ziegelheim editions[1]. A January 1954 New York federal court ruling found that Ziegelheim was a publisher, printer, binder and retailer of Hebrew religious books in Manhattan, trading as 'Ziegelheim, New York', and the only publisher of that name in the United States; he had published a Selichot in Vienna in 1920 and came to the United States in 1938[3].

Propes was born in Poland and immigrated to Palestine in 1925. In 1948 he was cultural officer of the Givati Brigade and painted murals in army camps. He co-founded the 'Group of Ten' and later helped organise the abstract painters' group 'Tatzpit'; in 1951 he won the Dizengoff Prize[2]. In 1958 he illustrated a kibbutz Haggadah for Hakibbutz Ha'artzi Hashomer Hatzair[2], followed by this Haggadah for the Zimzon edition[2]. A copy in the Jewish Museum Frankfurt library shows its Had Gadya illustration with the Angel of Death[1]. The illustrated cover shows a procession of women and youths in an Israeli modernist style, in blue, black and sand tones. Propes was a member of Kibbutz Ein HaHoresh from 1951 to 1958, and from 1960 until his death in 1985 taught at the Avni Institute, where a building is named after him. He became known for his Haggadah illustrations: the Hashomer Hatzair kibbutz Haggadah, displayed at Heichal Shlomo, and the traditional Haggadah published by Zimzon in 1961[3].

The spread shows, on the right, the title 'Seder Haggadah shel Pesach – The Haggadah of Passover', with an English introduction and the start of Kiddush; on the left, a colour illustration of Pharaoh's daughter and her maidens finding Moses in the basket on the Nile. Shulsinger's press, on East 4th Street, was one of the most prolific Hebrew printers in mid-20th-century America. The Arnold Levin collection at Penn holds dozens of its Haggadah issues from 1944 to 1958, many dated 1955[2]. In the 1950s the brothers also printed the Haggadah translated by Abraham Regelson and illustrated by Siegmund Forst[1]. Shulsinger's 'The Haggada of Passover', c. The press was founded by the Jerusalem-born brothers Michael Yehoshua (b. 1906) and Samuel (b. 1908) Shulsinger, who emigrated to the United States in 1928. Their first Hebrew book, the six orders of the Mishnah, appeared in 1944. According to Getzel Kressel, the press printed more than a hundred million items[3].

A copy of this edition is held in the Iraqi Jewish Archive, overseen by the US National Archives, which describes it as a Haggadah printed in Livorno for the Baghdadi community[1]. The same year a Baghdadi Haggadah was also printed in Baghdad itself, by Ezra Reuven Dangur[2]. For generations Livorno served as a printing centre for the communities of the Middle East and North Africa; as early as 1887 it produced an illustrated Baghdad-rite Haggadah with Arabic translation[3]. Baghdadi Haggadot were printed in small formats for home use, and many were worn out or lost when Iraqi Jews left in 1950–1951.

The Haggadah reached Holocaust survivors too, carried by soldiers and relief organisations. The 1945 printing came with a leaflet, 'Lest We Forget', a ritual of remembrance for the six million and the heroes of the Ghetto uprising[2]. The de Sola Pools' translation stresses the ideal of a liberty 'doubly theirs as Americans and as Jews'[3]. The cover reads 'of the United States', wording absent from the 1943 cover.

It includes a Hebrew–Teitsh translation and the Yiddish pieces 'Mishlei Chachamim' and 'Sipurei Yetziat Mitzrayim' (or 'Sipurei Ge'ulat Yisrael'); 34 pages, illustrated[1]. An added frontispiece, 'Kumu Tze'u' ('Rise and go forth'), presents redemption from the Nazis as a parallel to the Exodus. According to a Fordham scholar, it is a Haggadah of the first Passover after the war. Föhrenwald was the third-largest DP camp in the American zone and the last to close, in 1957. The cover shows a family Seder, and inside are illustrations modelled on early Haggadot, such as the Four Sons and the Ten Plagues. The passage 'Pour out thy wrath' took on special meaning in 1946[2]. Survivor families used such Haggadot in the camp, as shown by the Zolno family's Haggadot in the US Holocaust Memorial Museum[3]. (2) Haggadah with Hasidic commentaries collected from the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov, with an essay by Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropol. Both are in good condition, in soft covers.

Beide in gutem Zustand, Softcover.

במלחמת העולם השנייה התפרסמה בזכות כרזות לממשלה הבריטית, ובהן 'Make Do and Mend'; כרזותיה שמורות ב-Imperial War Museum[1].

Hebrew and English in parallel columns, with coloured Art Deco drawings; two identical title pages, right and left. Donia Nachshen (1903–1987) was born in Zhitomir. Her family fled after the 1905 pogrom and settled in London, where she studied at the Slade School of Art. By the 1920s she was an established book designer, illustrating Anatole France, Schnitzler and Oscar Wilde in a style drawing on Russian folk art and Art Deco. During World War II she became known for her posters for the British government, among them 'Make Do and Mend'; her posters are held by the Imperial War Museum[1]. This is one of the most important illustrated Haggadot published in England between the wars, and it preceded the Szyk Haggadah (London 1940), which Cecil Roth also edited and translated. The collection's copy: hard cover, 24.5 cm, 90 [1] + xix [1] pp. The leaves are yellowed with age stains, the covers are rubbed, and the title page and spine have been repaired with tape. In Paris it went through many editions with Durlacher; the 11th edition appeared in 1946[2]. The bookshop was founded in 1902 by Pessach Meir Goldschmidt, born in Plungė (Plungian), Lithuania. His son Victor (Pinchas) ran it from 1927 until his death in 1973. After the Holocaust it was practically the only shop of its kind in Central Europe and supplied religious books to communities worldwide, including Djerba in Tunisia[3][4]. Victor Goldschmidt founded a publishing house that acquired the rights to the Rödelheim prayer books[3][4].

The Matz press operated in Vilna, with interruptions, from 1833/34 until the mid-1920s. Eliezer Lipman Matz took it over from his father-in-law Binyamin Rotenberg at the end of 1836; his son Yehuda Leib inherited it in 1873/74, and after his death his widow Freidel Matz ran it until 1917/18. In 1910 Freidel headed the press, although the imprint still carries the name L. L. Matz[1]. After the restrictions on Hebrew printing in Russia were lifted in 1862, Matz was one of the main competitors of the Romm press in Vilna[2]. In 1908 the press issued a Haggadah 'with Ivri-Teitsh translation… with four commentaries' (64 pp.), held by the National Library of Israel[3]. Other Yiddish books also came from the Matz press in 1910[4]. The title page reads 'Seder Haggadah shel Pesach with Ivri-Teitsh; we have added the laws of the search for hametz in the customary Jewish language… also Birkat ha-Mazon and the Song of Songs in large vocalized letters', and below 'Vilna, in the year ʿ-T-D'. At the foot is a Russian title: 'ГАГАДА ШЕЛЪ ПЕСАХЪ. This copy: the title page is worn and torn.

L. Matz, rue Zavalnaya, maison Wendorf, 1910.

Exemplar: Titelblatt abgenutzt und eingerissen.
